English Dub Review: Suicide Squad Isekai Episode 8

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

The Squad head back to the kingdom to a less than warm reception, with one even slapping Harley and being eaten by King Shark as a result. This leads to him being set up for execution being exiled, but they later get word from Waller that they have 24 hours to get home or else she’ll detonate the bombs, starting with Clayface as an example, though he quickly regenerates. The team heads out to rescue King Shark.

OUR TAKE

So, uh…I know that Amanda Waller is typically an antagonist who is meant to have her comeuppance after making some error, usually due to her hubris and arrogance. But this year, we’ve had two separate adaptations of the character in this show and My Adventures with Superman, both of whom have got to be THE MOST FUCKING STUPID VERSIONS OF THE CHARACTER EVER. The MAwS version for plunging Metropolis into Martial Law, immediately making sure the public fears her more than Superman, but THIS? One has to assume that this Amanda had read up on Clayface, right? That he was a shapeshifter? That he could regenerate from seemingly fatal wounds? Who would be able to survive a bomb in his system by just reforming from the exploded area?! Even before his brief “death” I was wondering about why Clayface of all people was chosen for this time when his abilities would make him impossible to control through the same methods. Turns out it was so we could have this insulting fake out death. The only POSSIBLE way to make up for this would be to show that this was somehow something she expected and planned for, but there’s absolutely nothing even implying it.

Sigh. Anyway, with just two episodes left, I think it’s safe to say that this show is dead in the water. The fantasy kingdom stuff is boring as hell, Amanda Waller here is dumb as shit, the bomb stuff and avoiding detonation has only ever been a chore at best, and to lay as thick as possible how lazy the localization has been, a character in this episode just starts singing in Japanese. I guess no one in the dub team thought we would notice characters suddenly speaking a language other than English? We’ve still got Enchantress, Katana, and Killer Croc out there to deal with, along with the queen apparently being possessed by something monstrous, and Harley’s doppelganger Aldora has proven to be as useless as tits on a shark. Sorry to go on a rant here, but I’ve officially had it with Suicide Squad Isekai. I still haven’t seen the new Batman show, but I’ve heard mostly good things, so here’s hoping I’m done with DC shows this year being so disappointing. And if not, well, that’s one more reason the bar has been set so low for that upcoming Superman movie that’s coming out next year. So yeah, two episodes left, can’t possibly get much worse, but I’ve been wrong before so we’ll see.
