English Dub Review: Black Butler “His Butler, Scheming”
Overview:
Ciel is chosen to play cricket, but the boys of Sapphire Owl House are the perennial wooden spooners. They’ve had just one victory in the history of the tournament. Ciel resolves to wrest another triumph for his House—without any miracles.
Our Take:
The last episode ended with seeing a character named Vincent Phantomhive. Now as you know I’m unfamiliar with this series but I know that Ciel’s last name is Phantomhive so this made my ears perk up. It wasn’t quite clear whether this was a flashback or current so I thought it would be weird if a relative of Ciel’s was around the school and they never interacted.
It turns out it was a flashback and Vincent is Ciel’s father. Not only that but the last time the Sapphire Owl House won the cricket match was when Vincent was a prefect with them.
This leads me to a technical talking point and that is the voice-acting. Since this takes place in England, most of the actors do their best with an English accent. Most of them do a great job and of course, there are a few that are not so great. But I don’t think I’ve ever heard Austin Tindle do an English accent and with him being the voice of Vincent Phantomhive this was my first opportunity. This made me love him even more because he did a fantastic job and I’m a little sad we won’t be hearing more of him that I’m aware of.
