English Dub Review: Undead Unluck “To You, From Me”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

With the combined forces of Andy, Fuuko, Anno, and a fully re-aged Rip, UMA Autumn is soundly defeated.

OUR TAKE

And that’s a wrap on Season 1 of Undead Unluck, which hopefully has a second season coming because this sure as hell ain’t written to be anything more than an ending to this specific arc. Aside from there obviously being a lot of stuff left unresolved like the three remaining seasonal UMAs, facing Under, and the eventual end of this time loop, this episode is just simply not interested in being a conclusion to anything else besides what it is immediately dealing with. Autumn is defeated, Anno Un is given a sort of conclusion (though is revealed to only have been a double for the real Akira, who has somehow lost use of his pen for some reason), and then cut to Juiz and Billy meeting at the site of a different UMA sighting. You could practically just slap on a “to be continued” on this and simply expect people to show up again next week for the next episode. I certainly hope it DOES get more episodes since I’ve more or less enjoyed the show I’ve been watching the past six months, but still, it’s pretty ballsy to not even remotely act like a season finale that’s meant to resolve the past twenty four episodes.

Again, the episode itself is fine, though it does feel like it pulls a bit out of its butthole to get to even this level of completion. There’s the finishing of Anno Un’s story that I already mentioned, which I guess means he won’t be an active part of the rest of the series, but also there’s a sudden bit of exposition regarding how Rip was able to survive as a child, which Annoy then replicates and sacrifices his double to replicate. We already have an explanation for how he would know this, but it still can’t help but feel a bit out of nowhere, not to mention him making this big sacrifice for a character he only has a superficial connection to is pretty weird. Heck, there’s quite a lot we learn about Rip and his backstory right here. While Andy and Fuuko do get stuff to do at least, with Andy apparently powering up a bit from Fuuko being in his memories…somehow, they don’t exactly feel like the center of attention in their own season finale. I guess this’ll be something to consider as I go through all twenty four episodes again to get ready for the Season Review next week.
