Review: The Great North “Any Court in a Storm Adventure”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Another blizzard traps the family in the cabin, along with a couple guests, so they try not to lose their marbles as much as last time. They do not succeed.

OUR TAKE

This week’s episode is a sort of sequel to an episode from last season, Code Enough Said Adventure, which involved Beef going a bit mad because of wanting to watch the movie Enough Said over and over. I haven’t watched that episode since it first came out in October of 2022, but I did remember it vaguely enough when they made reference to it here. Having a snow in while company is over is another one of those plots that could only happen in places like Alaska, which once again shows how unique a show like this can be compared to its peers, so it’s always cool (pun very much intended) when they can make clear of the show’s strengths and ways it stands out. That said, from what I remember about the previous blizzard based episode, this is a bit of a weaker follow up. That first one felt unique among other episode plots and focused on how hilariously unhinged everyone was getting under the circumstances. This time, we’re doing that again, but also Beef wants everyone to have everyone act like the Royal British Navy, which seems rather arbitrary, even if the supposed reason is to provide some regiments and structure when they’re cut off from society.

I guess that’s my real take away from this episode overall. It’s alright, nothing really wrong with it, but it’s definitely trying to recreate an episode that they already did, doesn’t add a ton of new stuff to it, and ultimately feels like a lesser follow up as a result. I still like it more or less, but that’s mainly because I like the show and characters, not really anything to do with this plot itself. I think there’s actually less non-family members in this episode than the other one, which kinda narrows down the amount of unique interactions. Dirt is there now, though she doesn’t really come into play until late in the game and doesn’t add a whole lot to the plot, but that would probably be a good description of her contribution to the show overall. Again, it’s just an okay episode that’s probably good if you’re sick and want to binge The Great North while you’re in a fevered stupor, but not one that’s going to really stick out as the show goes on. Anyway, three more episodes left in the season so hopefully we get another great one before it’s over.
