Review: Royal Crackers “Mall”

Overview

The Bakersfield Mall grand reopening quickly turns into a bloodbath because there’s a haunted escalator that wants to exact revenge on Stebe.

Our Take

We’ve seen animated comedies take on the haunted halls of modern malls in series like South Park and Family Guy, but my thing is if a show can take a premise and make it their own, I’m all game. Royal Crackers does just that by not necessarily making the mall the butt of a joke, but rather a backdrop for a slasher-fueled hellscape over the course of 22-minutes that might be one of the funniest single episodes of animated comedy I have ever seen.

The likes of Tim Dillon, Eric Bauza, Ana Gasteyer, and Robert Englund round out a list of a STACKED guest cast that all delivers but what Royal Crackers does so well is that they don’t take away from the focus on the Hornsby family which can be a very delicate, and oftentimes failed, outcome whence dealing with guest stars. Those names I just mentioned are all big-time names, but the Hornsbys were hysterical and had my sides in knots the entire episode.

We had a LOT going on in this week’s episode, some of which I don’t even want to spoil because it’s so out of left-field I almost want to reserve it so you can watch and experience for yourself. But, when you watch a grown man get anally raped by a mannequin your life changes a bit, moreso when you see a vomit battle take place, the latter of which used to be a no-no by Adult Swim S&P department but I’m happy to see has since been lifted.

I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop on this season of Royal Crackers, but the Adult Swim original series continues to outdo itself each week. Is the premise familiar for “Mall”? Sure, but the Royal Crackers blender knows how to use enough of its own ingredients to make this one a must-watch.
