English Dub Review: Undead Unluck “Outsmart”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Billy and the rest of Under continue their escape through the base with the Roundtable in tow, but the Union doesn’t let him go without a fight. With a combination of Fuuko’s Unluck, Andy’s regeneration, and a bunch of icy security measures, they manage to slow Under down, but this only buys time before they manage to make it outside. After some hesitation from the betrayal, Tatiana joins the fight and manages to land a blow on Billy, which allows the Union to reobtain Apocalypse. Under still escapes with the table, but the hunt is on to complete the four quests, and Billy mysteriously mentions that they won’t hand over “Ark”.

OUR TAKE

Billy is now leading under, though we do get a hint that his goals don’t ENTIRELY line up with the rest of the group, as Rip points out their goal is for AFTER god is dead, likely referring to Negators taking over the world. Under is still able to flee with the table, but Unfeel/Phil is able to get Apocalypse back, leaving both sides with the incomplete pieces, meaning that even once all four quests are done, they’ll have to meet again to hear more, or risk incurring the final penalties. But Under is actually fine with Ragnarok occuring, so maybe they won’t care either way? Also of note is the brief flash of memories Apocalypse gives Fuuko, which is something apparently every artifact can do if it’s old enough. What’s interesting about these memories, however, is the memories she’s hit with. Among them are shots of when the Roundtable was only two people: Juiz and Victor. We’d seen her mention him a couple episodes ago, as well as hints at their connection in the two EDs, but now seems to confirm they were the first two members of the Union.

Where Billy and the rest come into things in terms of joining order is still unclear, but we’re at least getting some more info drip fed to us as things develop. Regardless, the two groups whose names start arbitrarily with a U are now at war, as well as having four UMAs to hunt down and deal with. And things haven’t really changed that much since last episode since THIS episode is just a continuation of what happened LAST episode, so everything there is to mention about the changed status quo and what it could mean for the remaining seven episodes has kinda already been said. There’s at least a couple members of Under we haven’t been properly introduced to, but there’s also like HALF the members of the Union who haven’t gotten any focus beyond standing there with unique character designs, and I doubt we’ll be able to get to all of them with the remaining time. Still, I’m quite interested in seeing what they plan on doing with what’s left and hopefully it gets enough interest that we get another season to adapt more of the manga.
