English Dub Review: Delicious in Dungeon “Red Dragon III/Good Medicine”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Falin starts acting strange in the middle of the night, leading Laios and the crew to a menacing figure who wants them gone.

Our Take:

The party succeeded in rescuing Falin from death, but their journey was far from over. With the second half of Delicious in Dungeon underway, we should expect more monstrous yet delectable cooking as they embark on their journey to return to the surface. However, we will also expect more dangers that would test the crew’s skills and friendship, including the mysterious elf figure at the end of the previous episode. But, as it turns out, the figure is actually the Mad Mage Laios discovered during his little trek through the Living Paintings. I guess that “side-quest” with Laios searching for food in the paintings wasn’t pointless after all.

Unfortunately, the Mad Mage’s return also resulted in Laios and his gang being separated from Falin once more as she succumbs to the Mage’s power. Why can’t they stay together for more than one episode just this once? Additionally, they encounter more of the orcs led by the chief’s sister, who gives them their brand of medicine to heal Laios and Marcille’s wounds. How they fed them, however, is a different story, but at least it made me laugh.

The episode’s first half gave us a glimpse of the Mad Mage’s formidable presence, who can use ancient magic to create the dungeon’s monsters and has taken Falin. However, the second half offers another superb example of the show’s character depth, mainly for Chilchuck’s annoyance toward his party’s recklessness. Of course, the reason for his irritation is that he doesn’t want his friends to die because of their idiocy. So, instead of lying to them as planned, Chilchuck opens up to Laios about his feelings. It was a satisfying turning point in Chilchuck’s personality that elevates the episode’s strong start to the party’s second part of their dungeon adventure.
