English Dub Review: Delicious in Dungeon “Raspberries/Grilled Meat”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Marcille recalls when she first met Falin as young students. After a quick wash-up, an inadvertent misstep lands her in deep water with an angry spirit.

Our Take:

Another episode means another batch of delicious monster food for Laios and the crew to consume. However, this particular set of cuisines is special because this episode focuses mainly on the half-elf magician Marcille. If there’s another reason Delicious in Dungeon favors both character depth and delectable food, it should be this episode, which not only expands Marcille’s character further but also her importance to the team and the show’s world-building.

In the first half of the episode, Marcille flashes back to when she started her first year at a magic school. There, she strives to study enough magic to create a safer dungeon with useful monsters for other adventurers to travel. It’s also where Marcille first met a young Falin, who introduced her to the dungeon and its ecosystem. It’s interesting to see more of Marcille through her flashback and further showcase the significance of the team’s relationship with Falin. However, it’s also Marcille’s anger toward Laios’s remaining party members and her critical condition from battling the water spirit that drives her character. Yeah, remember the other members that just straight up quit after Falin was eaten in the first episode? Well, one of them is back, and she seems to be working with another team.

Moments like this episode emphasize Marcille as more than just a comedy punching bag regarding her distaste for eating monsters. With her profound magic and knowledge, she serves as a valuable asset to the team, making her current condition more critical to the series’s arc. I would also give Marcille’s voice actor, Emily Rudd, more credit for balancing the humor with some of its drama elements. We waited for a week for Laios to recover from food poisoning, so now it looks like we have to wait another week for Marcille to recover from her severe injuries. Of course, there’s also one of Laios’s former party members to deal with. Their reunion should be an interesting one.
