Fewture Studios Teases Terrifying Steamboat Willie Animated Feature Made With Unreal Engine

As of January 1st, 2024, the Steamboat Willie cartoon has officially entered the public domain more than 95 years after its initial release. The animated short featured the one and only Mickey Mouse, and thanks to political discord in 2022 whereby Republican lawmakers refused to extend the copyright restrictions stemming from Disney’s opposition to the Florida Parental Rights in Education Act, a literal gold rush has ensued to see who can use elements derived from the iconic short in the most ridiculous way possible.

John Oliver has vowed to use Steamboat Willie as a new mascot for his multiple Emmy-winning Last Week Tonight. Live-action horror movies are already in development featuring the iconic characters. And now, Fewture Studios is jumping onboard with its own entry, The Return of Steamboat Willie. This one, a feature-length animated horror film made entirely in Unreal Engine already scares the shit out of me more than the last Resident Evil game did which makes this one that much more appealing to me. The premise sees Steamboat Willie coming back for his boat 95 years after being locked away.
