Comic Review: RICK AND MORTY: MEESEEKS, P.I. #3

Detective Meeseeks continues his search for Jerry, having recently lost track of Jerry. His overall task, if you recall, is to help Jerry find the inter-dimensional cable box remote for the family T.V., before Rick realizes it’s gone. Finding the remote can only happen once Jerry has been located, so that’s where we’re at with that. The goons continue to loom at the behest of their shadowy boss, who may or may not be Rick. Meanwhile, Rick struggles to keep his sport booking/cable box empire up and running in the days leading up to the big game.

Throughout its limited run, Meeseeks PI’ has been an enjoyable cavalcade of noir homages both large and small, and it’s still full steam ahead, reference-wise in the penultimate instalment of the hard-boiled yarn. There’s always been an extra dose of adoration in there for Frank Miller’s ‘Sin City, which is expressed in this third issue in numerous ways. First, there’s a great variant cover inspired by ‘The Long Goodbye’ in which artist Marc Ellerby substitutes Detective Meeseeks for Marv. Then there’s the fact that Meeseeks also has a similar list to  Marv’s iconic “And my mitts” list, although Meeseeks’ list contains extra items like a plumbus and a gnarly looking rat. Meeseeks finally starts to realize that he hasn’t been asking the right questions. He’s been distracted by the goons a fair bit, and finding the remote has been an overall emotionally draining experience. He hasn’t even begun to suspect Rick as the possible man behind the curtain, which makes the reveal that it was never Rick, all the more embarrassing for our blue lollipop of a detective.
On the Rick side of things, the plans to dominate on game day is moving right along. A minor part of Rick’s clean-up effort that the mind can dwell on the absolute horror of – Rick portals all the excess unfulfilled Meeseeks into the empty depths of space. Just picture all those Meeseeks, floating, forever deathless in the black of space, never to complete their tasks, nor to find even a modicum of peace in this pitiless world. Truly as haunting a portrait of despair as any other out there.
Detective Meeseeks continues to look adorable in his little crime solving mittens – he may or may not find Jerry, but he’s at least looking good! Stoned Morty may not be able to stay on top of his cable box delivering duties, but he is full of great one liners and wisdom. “I am filled with a turquoise purpose,” indeed! Tune in next time for the thrilling conclusion of Meeseeks, PI!
