English Dub Review: The Misfit of Demon King Academy “To Sever the Fate”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Lay challenges Avos to liberate Misa, whom he loves. However, Heavenly Father God NousGalia aids Avos and seals Lay’s power of Evansmana. There, Anos and Shin arrive. Shin fights NousGalia once again to avenge his late wife, but he struggles against the enormous power of God. Then, he hears a voice for the first time in two thousand years…

Our Take:
The battle between Anos and Avos continues, with Anos succeeding in reviving Shin’s faith in himself. However, it’ll probably take a lot more than a confidence boost for them to win the fight and rescue Misa. Part of the reason is that Avos immediately gained the upper hand thanks to the arrival of NousGalia, who seals Lay’s power of Evansmana away. Lucky for Lay, Anos and Shin escaped the realm just in time to confront NousGalia, with Anos giving the Heavenly Father God the first blow, which was one of the best parts of the episode.
As for the rest of the episode, it’s about as action-packed as you’d expect from the show’s climax, with the animation spewing with bleak vibrancy. While Lay continues to battle Avos despite his lack of power, Shin winds up in a personal fight with NousGalia and his judgement toward the right-hand man’s sins. However, it’s also packed with surprises and emotions that are as rewarding as the fight sequences. The major twist that helped turn the tide of Shin’s battle is Lina, who happens to be the Great Spirit Leno all along. With Leno’s power and a brief appearance by her grandmother, Shin managed to finally kill NousGalia, hopefully for good this time.
That battle is unsurprisingly as satisfying as Lay’s, which has him using the ability Shin taught him to free Misa from Avos’s control. It looks like we don’t have to wait until the final episode to get to that point. Of course, the satisfying part of this moment is the strong love Lay and Misa share, with Lay willing to sacrifice his life to rescue her and Misa still loving Lay despite him always putting her in harm’s way. However, that doesn’t mean Avos is gone forever because Avos and Misa are still the same person, meaning both could disappear at any moment. Even worse is that Avos gained possession of the Magic Sword of Destruction Venuzdnor before Anos, Shin, and Leno arrived.
“To Sever the Fate” is a thrilling and rewarding continuation that sets up the final phase of Anos’s battle against Avos. More importantly, it also sets the stage for a possible family reunion between Misa and her parents. Since this is the first half of the show’s second season, with the second half premiering next year, anything could happen in next week’s episode, so let’s hope it doesn’t end the first part on a depressing note.
