English Dub Review: The Dangers in my Heart “Karte 8: I Had a Dream”
Overview
Parent-teacher day mortifies Kyotaro. Not only is his mother at school, but she’s bonding with Anna! Things couldn’t get any worse.
Our Take
Chihiro joins Anna in the library, revealing to Kyotaro that Anna talks about him constantly, embarrassing her. The surprise comes when Chihiro notices Kyotaro’s newfound ability to not only converse normally but also smile. The atmosphere later changes during a parent-teacher conference when Kyotaro finds himself seated next to Anna and her seemingly overbearing mother. But a slight sense of unease sets in when Anna overhears Kyotaro agreeing with his mother about Anna’s beauty. Library time becomes more interesting as Anna starts getting closer, with a comical incident involving Kyotaro’s whispered warning leading to her falling off her chair.
A chance encounter in the rain results in Kyotaro biking home only to discover Anna left a bag with tampons in his basket. Racing back to return them, he’s surprised to find out they were intended for Anna’s mother. A strange dream about Anna precedes Kyotaro catching a cold from the rain. Anna’s post-school visit with ice cream leads to an impulsive tea invitation, culminating in Kyotaro passing out in embarrassment. Anna, attempting to help, can’t resist hugging him in his delirium. Awakening in different clothes, Kyotaro questions whether it was a dream until his sister confirms with a get-well note from Anna. His mother further affirms Anna’s concern during the visit. Returning to school, Kyotaro faces a surprise…
Overall, this was quite a passable episode. There’s a quiet beauty to be found in the way this show portrays the blossoming relationship between Anna and Kyotaro. with genuine moments of sweetness emerge as Anna navigates the awkwardness of Kyotaro’s mother and the later scenes of Kyotaro checking on Anna at home during a very specific moment she was having. And while the comedy helps, it knows how to keep things compelling on a somewhat romantic level. But with 4 episodes left, I’m curious what direction this takes next.
