English Dub Review: The Dangers in my Heart “Karte 3: I Want to Hug You”

Overview

Anna and her friends keep their guard around the boys; what they want is obvious. But Kyotaro’s different. Each brief interaction brings him and Anna closer together.

Our Take

The episode begins when Kyotaro writes about a fictional story involving “dark fantasy” as he explores his creative side. However, the dynamics shift when he visits the infirmary with a headache and encounters Anna, who is grappling with a stomach ache. And it’s here that Kyotaro contemplates his feelings towards Anna, especially when she extends kindness by sharing medicine.

Later on, the proceedings take an interesting turn when a trick that involves revealing a girl’s favorite position becomes the center of attention. The girls manage to foil the boys’ plans, but Kyotaro inadvertently becomes part of the scenario, with Anna unwittingly engaging in a gesture suggesting a girl-on-top position. Kyotaro grapples with conflicting emotions, unable to reconcile his initial hatred with the potential feelings of attraction towards Anna, and even looks out for Anna in his way after an accident she has involving a Basketball…

Overall, I’ve enjoyed seeing Anna’s growth so far during these short 3 episodes. The direction and musical score, masterfully handled by Kensuke Ushio, contribute to the overall impact of the series. Still not a fan of all the perv jokes though I can’t say it’s unrealistic for middle schoolers to make up weird shit of that nature. And the events that follow strongly hint at a more profound exploration regarding the complexity of personal growth and relationships during adolescence. Hopefully, we see more progression in later episodes.
