Blu-Ray Review: Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar
If you haven’t yet, read our review of Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar, but for a quick recap, the film stars Brendon Small, Tommy Blacha, Victor Brand, Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner, King Diamond, Mark Hamill, Kirk Hammett, Jon Hamm, Scott Ian, Amy Lee, Malcolm McDowell, Juliet Mills, Laraine Newman, Raya Yarbrough, and Livia Zita.
In the new feature-length film, after the heroic rescue of Toki Wartooth, DETHKLOK frontman Nathan Explosion finds himself traumatized in a BRUTAL professional and romantic flat-spin all while he is tasked with fulfilling the prophecy and confronting the ultimate songwriting challenge: write the SONG OF SALVATION and save the planet.
This review focuses on the home release Blu-Ray which drops today (link above) via Warner Home Entertainment, and mostly the special features that come included. The BIG feature that comes with the release is the excellent Behind the Metal Curtain (Featurette) where we dive deep into the making of Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar with interviews with show co-creator Brendon Small and his team of writers, animators, and musicians as they share the inspirations behind turning the hit Adult Swim series into its first feature film. We also get a killer poster, and if you’ve read ANY review of a home release I’ve ever gotten, you know I’m a sucker for posters and this one’s a good one.
With the MAX streaming service and Adultswim.com typically playing volley as to where the hell you can even watch all of the seasons of Metalocalypse, I’m finding myself finding more and more value in home releases. Today, death metal is a totally acceptable, yes underground but still acceptable, pathos to have come across a franchise as monumental as Metalocalypse. Tomorrow? Who knows? But, for $30, getting a home release that comes with one of the better animated films of the year, a poster, a fantastic featurette, and the security that comes with owning some that is yours and nobody can take it away (well, unless if you have people in your life that steals shit, which you shouldn’t), purchasing Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar is a no-brainer.
Yes, I can complain that there isn’t any commentaries, maybe some deleted scenes, and a rather uninspiring menu (I feel like the DVD interactive menu is a lost art), but you should buy anything and everything with this franchise attached to it because it will change your life.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
