Review: Justice League: Warworld

Overview

Warworld, a place of unending brutal gladiatorial combat, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and others must unite to form an unbeatable resistance to lead entire planet to freedom.

Our Take

Jesus, tap-dancing Christ. In this year of our Lord 2023 how many fucking comic book multiverse movies and TV shows am I going to have to sit through?

The film set in the Tomorrowverse features a voice cast that includes Jensen Ackles as Batman, Stana Katic as Wonder Woman, Darren Criss as Superman, Ike Amadi as Martian Manhunter, Troy Baker as Jonah Hex, Matt Bomer as Old Man, Roger Cross as Machiste, Brett Dalton as Bat Lash, Trevor Devall as a drifter, John DiMaggio as Lobo, Robin Atkin Downes as Mongul, Frank Grillo as Agent Faraday, Rachel Kimsey as Mariah Romanova, David Lodge as a sheriff, Damian O’Hare as Deimos, and Teddy Sears as Warlord. The surprising thing is, I actually thought the voice cast was pretty damn good. Jenson Ackles’ Batman is growing on me, Darren Criss is a good Superman, and I really thought Robin Atkin Downes as Mongul was terrific.

Unfortunately, that’s where most of the praise is going to end. The character designs from WB Animation were absolutely god-awful. Literally the first scene featured a copy-and-paste facial design of Batman’s Two-Face being superimposed onto Jonah Hex. Later in the film, we come face-to-face with a frail Mongul that looks like he just escaped a nursing home. Not any of the aliens looked any better and most of the settings and backgrounds were bland, bland, bland which doesn’t surprise me with Jeff Wamester directing, the same guy who helped character design that god-awful Guardians of the Galaxy animated series that aired on Disney XD several years ago which was just as uninspiring and awful to look at.

The script from Jeremy Adams, Ernie Altbacker, and Josie Campbell was largely unoriginal, boring, and filled with chunky dialogue that is formulaic and largely bailed out by, again, the wonderful cast. WB Animation should be ashamed of this one. Justice League: Warworld should be sent to another multiverse so that it doesn’t exist in this one.
