English Dub Review: The Great Cleric “The Adventurers’ Guild”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Luciel starts to get a handle on his healing powers and what it’s going to take to improve them and survive in this new world. So he charts a course for a rather unexpected training destination—the Adventurers’ Guild!

Our Take:

Luciel has gotten the hang of his healing powers following his Spartan training. But the true test is to see if it’s effective in healing the adventurers’ wounds. Thankfully, he didn’t have to wait that long to prove this theory, as he volunteered to cure the injuries of the guild members. Unfortunately, his MP isn’t high enough for Luciel to heal every adventurer, as he wound up passing out before he can cure the last one. Now filled with guilt, Luciel vows to get even stronger with his martial arts skills and healing magic to help everyone in need. To do that, he must join an adventurers’ guild and undergo intense training with the guild’s chief, Brod.

This episode is basically another examination of how an adventurer’s guild functions in an RPG fantasy world, as exclaimed by its bunny girl recipient, Anila. While this moment can be repetitive to those who have watched many other isekai shows with adventurers’ guilds, I can see this episode being helpful for people new to the genre. It also showcased Luciel’s determination to help those in need after failing to save the last injured adventurer. Despite the intense training by Brod, Luciel still strives to improve himself to not only live a perfect new life but also to become more reliable to others. Many adventurers don’t give healers much credit, but with Luciel’s martial arts skills at his disposal, the young teen may have a shot at changing that.

The episode also continues to show strong similarities between Luciel and Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia. While they’re both voiced by Justin Briner, they share a few characteristics that make them likable. They’re both determined to help people in need, even though their timidness threatened to block their paths, and they’re also generous and respectful toward others. It’s hard to tell which character was handled better since we’re only two episodes into this series, but I will say that Midoriya takes the cake so far. Despite a humorous moment involving Luciel’s goofy expressions, this character was trying a bit too hard to be like Midoriya regarding his personality. We’ll see how the rest of this formulaic isekai series turns out before I make that final decision.
