English Dub Review: My Tiny Senpai “My Senpai Is Small and Cute”

Overview:

Takuma Shinozaki is fairly new to his job. His senior, Shiori Katase, is always nice to him and he seems to take a liking to her.

Our Take:

Takuma Shinozaki is the new guy at his job. He goes through a lot of the usual struggles, such as performance anxiety when having to give a presentation and working overtime to finish assignments. Thankfully, his senpai is always there to help and encourage him. Shiori Katase is small and kind, which Shiozaki is drawn to.

There’s no real plot to this episode. It’s just a bunch of office worker situations and interactions between Shiozaki, Katase, and other co-workers. That’s not a bad thing though, as I like a lot of these interactions.

The show plays on Katase’s size a lot, in more ways than one, which is to be expected. Since she is small, the show makes her out to be cute and it works. She’s compared to a cat a lot, which makes sense given her cat-like behaviors and the fact that she really likes cats. She also has a chibi looks that comes complete with cat ears and a tail. She is very nice, not just to Shiozaki, but to everyone. I like her energy and she’s a fun character to watch.

Shiozaki isn’t bad so far either. I enjoy his interactions with Katase. They can be pretty awkward at times. It’s adorable sometimes and it’s a little hard to watch at other times. For example, the scene where Katase gives Shiozaki a massage is a little weird, especially the wording used in the dub. I still think they have solid chemistry overall.

There are a few other workers that we get a little glimpse of in this episode and I’m looking forward to seeing more of them. I’m especially curious about Chinatsu Hayakawa, Shiozaki’s childhood friend. She gets along well with Shiozaki and I enjoy the little bit of banter they have here. Another co-worker sees romantic possibilities between the two, so that could be an interesting path to take later on.

The dub is pretty good so far. There are some weird wording choices like I mentioned earlier, but there are still a number of hilarious lines in this episode. I’m also really liking Megan Shipman’s performance as Katase. I was hoping we wouldn’t just be hearing Anya in this character and I’m glad that’s the case. I appreciate her range as a voice actor.

Overall, this is a pleasant first episode. It’s not blowing me away, but I enjoy this as a big rom-com fan. It’s a pleasant watch and it seems mostly wholesome despite some dirty thoughts and suggestive scenes. I’m looking forward to seeing what more this show has to offer.
