English Dub Review: My Home Hero “From Today, I Am a Killer”

Overview:

Tosu Tetsuo is a 47-year-old humble businessman who loves his family. He finds out that Reika, his daughter in college, has been physically abused by her boyfriend, Matori Nobuto, and acts to protect her, which leads to a terrible, irreparable situation.

Our Take:

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about this so I was excited to get to review this. What I really like about it is that the main character is a middle-aged father and his wife seems like she’s going to be a fun character too. But it really does make you think, what wouldn’t you do for your child? I never thought about killing a Yakuza member with a rice maker but I might.

This was a very good first episode, in fact, my only complaint was that the tone of one of the opening scenes was a bit off for me. When Tetsuo sees Reika’s bruised face and she gets up and leaves the restaurant his reaction is played up for laughs and that just didn’t sit right with me. Luckily, the rest of the episode was solid and fit the tone more.

I love shows where characters have to use their brains to outwit physically superior opponents and I think that is what is going to happen here. The episode ended on an interesting cliffhanger and set up an interesting parallel between Tetsuo and the father of the man he just killed.
