English Dub Review: Dr. Stone: New World: “New World Map”
Overview: With Ryusui (Clifford Chapin), Gen (Brandon McInnis) and the others’ help, Senku (Aaron Dismuke) comes up with a plan to make bread to provide long-lasting food for their expedition.
Our Take: There’s no complicated science to figuring out to open a new season of an anime. New World understands that, picking up right after the events of the Ryusui OVA, rather than wasting time recapping.
“New World Map” also excellently builds upon the goodwill established for Ryusui in the previous animation. While his greed is charming in a comedic sense, it’d be easy for the character to coast on that alone. However, he becomes a more fully ranged character in his greed for money and hearts alike.
The mission also focuses on a different issue that can be easy to forget about for a long voyage: a sustainable food supply. Bread is the remedy to that very issue and the show relies on its strengths for getting to the oven.
The show smartly presents the farming process going into factors, like soil, and how it goes beyond simply planting seeds. The Minecraft-esque movies’ are cute, easy to follow voxel style segments in explaining the Kingdom of Science’s methods for farming and map overview.
Beyond the logistics, there’s also a personal weight added on top for Taiju. With the amount of food correlating to the amount of people who can be de-petrified, Taiju’s motivation stemming from his late parents is touching.
Of course, it wouldn’t be the science-centric series that it is without a healthy dose of levity. The difference of expectations between the Ishigami village natives and those of the modern world is lighthearted and fun. Senku, Gen, and Ryusui’s view of burnt bread versus the others is a great example of that humor.
However, it also kicks off their next intriguing mission in finding the next quirky personality in a chef. The new lessons, and character that they come from, makes Senku’s bread quest even more exciting.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
