English Dub Review: Buddy Daddies “After Rain Comes Fair Weather”

Overview (Spoilers Ahead):

Kazuki takes a day off from his parenting duties, which leaves Rei in charge of Miri.

Our Take:

Kazuki has been doing a great job at taking care of Miri so far. That being said, he does almost all of the work himself and he doesn’t feel appreciated by Miri or Rei. He decides to take a day off without telling anyone. This way, Rei will have no choice but to pull his own weight.

Kazuki goes out to have some fun, but he already runs into some trouble. He gets beaten up, but what gets to him the most is seeing his sister-in-law, Karin, for the first time in a long time. She tells him he doesn’t need to keep sending her any more money. She also tells Kazuki to stop blaming himself for his wife’s death. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to do that.

Karin has a heart-to-heart with Kazuki later and tries to help him think about the situation differently. He doesn’t have to let go of his memories, but he also doesn’t have to let them have such a negative impact on his life. This talk does put Kazuki in a better mood and it looks like he’s starting to change his perspective.

Meanwhile, Rei has to take care of Miri while Kazuki is away. Honestly, it looks like he can barely even take care of himself. He can’t cook, he can’t keep track of what day it is, and he doesn’t know where the hospital is. That’s especially important when Miri gets sick, but it all works out by the time Kazuki gets home.

I’m glad that this episode takes a good look at Kazuki’s past. His backstory has largely been a mystery up to this point with little hints sprinkled in here and there. Now we get a much better understanding on what he has gone through. We see how he met and lost his wife, which was sad to see. It’s hard to me to say her death was directly Kazuki’s fault, but I can understand why he thinks so. We also find out where Kazuki has been sending money and I like Karin. I think she does a good job at getting Kazuki out of his own head, which is clearly what he needed.

I also like seeing Rei being in charge for once. He’s terrible at it and he has a lot to learn, but he’s willing to do what he has to when Miri gets sick. He takes control of the situation and asks for help, which shows he can be responsible.

This is a great episode all around. I’m happy to know a lot more about Kazuki and it’s also nice to see that Rei can actually help out when he tries. Honestly, this is the strongest episode so far in my opinion and I think it’ll be tough to top.
