English Dub Review: Revenger: “Ask, and You Shall Receive”

Overview: With the help of Soji (Nazeeh Tarsha), Raizo (Aaron Campbell) searches for a purpose other than slaying the corrupt.

Our Take: While tying up loose ends of the opium case is the Revengers mission, it is not the focus. Instead, it attempts to slow down to figure some things out for Raizo.

It is a smart decision to focus on Kurima finding his purpose outside of nightly righteous slaughter. His solemn demeanor makes for comedic, slice-of-life moments in exploring various talents, like helping Dr. Murakami or running a bookshop. By association, Teppa’s own passion and advanced skill for crafting shows a more artistic side to him, similar to Usui. Soji is also a delight in looking out for him, especially with the obvious act he puts on.

Raizo’s knack for art is a nice side of him. Beautiful brush strokes and detailed animal features fill up the screen. His artistry, even impressing Nio, is a friendly new layer to their dynamic and a smart progression of his pessimistic stance on him.

Though, it is absolute nonsense how he obtains incredible art prowess out of thin air. Especially considering he, seemingly, has no experience with there being no precedent either. This half-baked writing is most certainly a defect of a pace that is too snappy for its own good. However, with the way of the sword having been Kurima’s sole existence, his strides beyond murder is a worthy and welcome character endeavor, despite the pitfalls.
