English Dub Review: Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition “Campfire of Dreams”

Overview:

Guts single-handedly wipes out the enemy forces, but the real battle has only just begun.

Our Take:

It doesn’t take long for Guts to wipe out 100 men. In fact, the battle is over before Casca returns with Griffith and the rest of the Hawks. Afterwards, Casca tends to Guts’ wounds and Guts opens up to Casca about everyone’s dreams. The conversation doesn’t last long though, as Guts doesn’t really care too much for talking about those things.

Meanwhile, Griffith volunteers the Band of the Hawk to take back the fortress of Doldrey. The only problem is Griffith has 5,000 troops and they’ll be going up against 30,000 soldiers. It will be an uphill battle for sure, but Griffith is determined to get the job done.

Outside of these main points, there isn’t much going on in this episode. We get another touching moment or two between Guts and Casca, which is always nice to see. We also see a little bit more from Judeau, who gives Casca a remedy to use on Guts. It’s nice to see more of the supporting characters getting a little more screen time.

There’s also some action at the beginning and end of the episode, but the rest of it feels kind of light on the story. It’s there, but it’s not as present as in previous episodes. At least we have a huge fight to look forward to in the next one.
