Wrestling In Animation: Updates On “The Gimmicks” And The Upcoming Stone Cold Steve Austin/Peacock Series
Arguably the biggest animated wrestling show, The Gimmicks, is slated to drop it’s second season via Avalanche on October 27th and fans can expect a few surprises to go along with the series. The Toonstar-produced series is adding Mark Consuelos as a producer and talent to go along with a slew of other voice talent announcements that will be more Hispanic influence to go along with the theme of this season entitled “The House of Chico” which follows the breakout star of the series, Rocky Romero. While Dave Ihlenfeld and David Wright will be the showrunners of the upcoming season, Mike Tenango joins the writing team and Alberto Portillo is a producer. Added to the voice cast this season are:
- Jairo Orozco + Bryan Rojo (Mexican Gueys)
- Eric Ochoa (Supereeego)
- Jesus Sepulveda (HBO Comedy Special, “Mr. Tough Life”)
- Laura DiLorenzo (Netflix, Selena: The Series)
- Fabian Alomar (FX, Mayans MC)
In addition to the new characters, The Gimmicks will be introducing more interactivity for it’s NFT token holders including up-voting in a Reddit-esque forum and a Rotten Tomatoes like rating board, both of which will continue to impact storylines and character arcs. We told you guys last week about a Stone Cold Steve Austin/Dan Soder adult animated series that is in development at Peacock and being held up by WWE, now we have more information about the reasoning behind it’s hold up this by way of old pal, Dan St. Germain.
Germain is as big of a WWE fan as anyone you’re gonna meet, so it’s no surprise that he would end up as part of this writing team, but on a recent episode of the WrestleRoasts podcast, the producer notes that the pitch was sold 15(!!!!) months ago and that there is ONE issue holding this up in business affairs, but we don’t know what that is.
Having said that, Soder made it sound like this thing was done in a recent interview, but that doesn’t appear to be the case according to Germain who says the writers are just at the outline stage which would mean that there would still need to be a lot of time devoted to fleshing out full scripts and then producing the series. So, even if the show got ordered tomorrow, it could realistically be on TV maybe by late 2023/most likely 2024.
In any event, a Stone Cold Steve Austin adult animated comedy would be legit and not even the first time we’ve seen the WWE Superstar animated having been a commentator during Celebrity Deathmatch and having his likeness used in animated series from the WWE Network like Camp WWE and Story Time.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
