English Dub Review: The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious “It Must Have Always Been…”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
A man visits the mansion while Natsume and Yuuri are out running errands.

Our Take:
I mentioned in last week’s episode that we might see Lilith and Natsume’s master in the finale, and boy, did I make the right call. After several mentions of the maid’s former master wanting her back, we finally see what her employer looks like. Fortunately, he doesn’t appear as threatening as the previous episodes suggested. In fact, he’s actually quite nice…and handsome.
Additionally, the episode gives us one final insight into Lilith’s past and how she’s connected to Yuuri’s family. It turns out that Yuuri’s parents had been friends with Lilith’s family for a long time. After Lilith’s parents suddenly vanished when she was young, they took her in, which explains how Yuuri first met Lilith. This led to her becoming a maid so she could repay Yuuri’s parents for their hospitality. While working at her master’s mansion, she received word about the accident, so she left to take care of Yuuri.
While this reveal isn’t without its heartfelt moments regarding the characters, it suffers because I saw this surprise coming a mile away. By the end of its first episode, I knew that Lilith and Yuuri’s family were somehow connected based on how she reacted to the letter, and this episode shows that my hunch was correct. So seeing it come to fruition after correctly guessing this theory dampens my experience with the storytelling’s surprises. If they had saved the first episode’s ending until the finale, it would’ve made the twist more impactful, but that’s just me.
However, the show does end the first season on a lovely note with Yuuri and Lilith’s outing to visit Yuuri’s parents’ grave and see the Christmas lights. Additionally, Lilith has the courage to ask Yuuri what kind of love he has for her, with Yuuri replying that he’s looking forward to finding that out together. Although, from the looks of Yuuri’s six snow children, we may have already found our answer. Aside from that, it’s a fitting end to my conflicting experience with this suspicious series.
