English Dub Review: SING “YESTERDAY” FOR ME: “Premonition of a Couple”

Overview: Rou (Dallas Reid) works out his issues with Shinako (Michelle Rojas) as her feelings for him have not changed and his romantic ones for her persist. She eventually turns to her old lover and friend, Uozumi (Aaron Campbell), for help.

Our Take: Seeing how Uozumi and Haru’s relationship has been advancing has been a treat in their increased intimacy. It is nicely highlighted through subtle simplicity in their cute little dinner dates and talking about their day, like Uozumi’s work. As good as the constant drama and wit that has been firing on all cylinders between them has been, it is a refreshing breath of fresh air in their positivity surrounding each other. We see that optimism in how she encourages his new position at a real art gallery and revels in his excitement for it in some sweet scenes.

Rou and Shinako’s relationship only gets more rocky and him only getting more annoying by the minute being the irritating root cause unfortunately. He deals with her still treating him like a kid which is understandably annoying but the gall on this kid makes him an eyesore of a character to get behind. That manifests in him Shinako is still combating her grief about the loss of her lover and him believing  he can replace his older brother, pathetically. Almost everything about him just screams whiny and arrogant kid that makes him incredibly hard to be likable.

Thankfully, Shinako’s conversations with Uozumi serve as a great palette cleanser. He is a mature voice of reason in how he understands how Rou must feel to be seen as a child in Shinako’s eyes and when the young man’s feelings are unhealthy and distance is needed despite them being childhood friends. Uozumi and Morinome are a soothing couple, creating a compelling case for why they are just as valid as the endgame couple as Haru and him. With her finally needing someone to fall back on in the grieving process, it makes how their relationship and feelings for one another evolve all the more engrossing.
