English Dub Review: Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun “Village of the Hollows”

Overview:

Majikaja shows Team Riko around the village. They also learn the village’s customs regarding value.

Our Take:

Riko and the gang follow Majikaja and go on a tour of the village. It’s revealed that the inhabitants of the village are all Hollows. The team finds the Prushka stone and it’s being made into a musical instrument. However, they still have no idea who took it in the first place.

Majikaja also shows them a marketplace. It’s explained that everyone barters with one another based on the value of their items. It turns out human children are very valuable, but Riko refuses to sell herself.

Meinya wanders into a crowd and one Hollow hurts it, possibly by accident. Meinya ends up being alright for the most part, but the Hollow in question has to pay for damaging an item of value. All of her valuables are taken, plus she’s partially skinned and one of her arms gets ripped off. Riko doesn’t want this to happen, but that is the law of the land.

The team finds lodging and terrible food. Shortly after, there’s an impact that is felt and they go to investigate. Majikaja explains that it’s Faputa, also known as “Princess of the Hollows.”

We learn a lot more about the village of Ilblu in this episode. It just so happens that we learn is kind of disturbing. The value system is intriguing at first, just learning about how the villagers barter. However, it gets unsettling when we see what happens if someone steals or harms something of value. I really felt for the Hollow who gets punished.

Faputa isn’t seen much here, but I’m curious about the idea of a princess. I don’t know if she actually rules over the village or over Hollows in general, but I imagine that will be explained soon enough. Regardless, I’m just glad to learn as much about the village and Hollows as possible.
