English Dub Review: Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout “A Guy Who Reincarnated as a Fantasy Knockout and a Free Spirit”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
The Goddess of Night, called down by Schwartz’s skill, explains the mystery behind Jinguji’s arrival in this world. Tachibana and Jinguji leave the Mercs territory, heading for the royal capital. Along the way, they stop by a peculiar village where squid is adored. There, as part of the preparations for a strange ceremony, Tachibana is kidnapped as a sacrifice…?!

Our Take:
Last week’s episode showcased a bit more on Schwartz, revealing his stats and alias. However, as he was demonstrating one of his abilities, he accidentally opened up a portal in the sky. Its abrupt ending got me questioning who or what is coming out of that dangerous hole, which explains my surprisingly high interest in the isekai series. The tail end of the season’s first half finally has the answer to this enticing question. It is the Goddess of Night who’s responsible for sending Schwartz to the new world.
After a brief confrontation with the new goddess, Tachibana and Jinguji head off on the road again, with Schwartz staying behind. They come across a new village where they appreciate nothing but squid. Even the merchandise sold was squid-related. However, they later discover that this strange town holds a shocking secret: it uses beautiful women as human sacrifices. Tachibana wound up being the town’s latest victim, along with the vengeful Telolilo, who’s also captured to be sacrificed. Unfortunately for Tachibana, the town thinks she’s pretty enough to be sacrificed, much to Telolilo’s anger.
The episode not only delivers many of the laughs as expected but also reveals some juicy details about the characters’ arrival in the new world. The goddesses summoned people to the world to be heroes, but they also gave them powerful weapons to aid them in their quests. For example, the Goddess of Night summoned Schwartz to the world and gave him the strongest weapon of all, Gram. However, Schwartz doesn’t have the sword anymore due to it being destroyed by Vizzd. Likewise, Tachibana was summoned by the Goddess of Love, with Jinguji as her weapon, explaining why both of them were placed together in the isekai world.
Another small detail covered in the episode relates to Tachibana’s “Unparalleled Beauty”. The victims affected by her ability showcase different side effects depending on their beliefs. For example, when Mercus asks Tachibana to marry him, it’s only for the sake of him being famous for being with a hero.
There’s also a sequence involving Tachibana and Jinguji looking over an elementary school survey with comical results. Tachibana wanted to see what Jinguji’s answers were before the latter drew over them with a marker. I thought this was another filler scene designed to provide comedy in the characters’ arguments at first. But it turns out to be necessary as Tachibana was pretty mad at Jinguji for covering his answers.
Overall, I would say that this episode marks a fun conclusion to the season’s first half, thanks to its charm and hilarious cliffhanger ending. This could be one of the shows where they get slowly repetitive with their brand of comedy as they progress. However, “Life with an Ordinary Guy” managed to be the type of show that represents some consistency in its enjoyability and humor, even if it follows a few basics in its RPG isekai formula. If it continues through the rest of the season, we could be looking at another surprise addition to the isekai anime library.
