Review: The Loud House “Bummer Camp/Sleepstakes”

Our Take:

For the first episode, the storyline consists of the Loud kids helping their Grampa keep Camp Mastadon in good condition when the other counselors left. Unfortunately, they later found out the reason why the counselors left. It’s because that Gramps is running the camp as a fisherman rather than an actual camp counselor.

The humor consists of the kids accomplishing fisherman chores with Gramps, such as catching fish in the lake and scraping barnacles off the boat. They later try to teach Gramps to do camp activities like archery, water skiing, and making smores, but his fisherman skills get in the way. Eventually, Gramps gets the confidence he needs to run the camp as a counselor and a fisherman when the kids convince him that they care about spending time with him.

The second episode has Lana facing her greatest phobia ever: sleepovers. Most of the plot is spent on Lincoln and the sisters helping Lana use “practice sleepovers” to overcome her homesickness, with television and Lisa’s stink spray serving as Lana’s helpful tools. Unfortunately, Lana’s tactics didn’t go as planned when she’s at her friend’s house for the sleepover, resulting in the siblings helping her away from home. Lana later discovers that a sleepover is more than just sleeping over, which calms her fear.

I would quickly call “Sleepstakes” one of the more relatable episodes that the show has aired in its run. Sleeping over at another person’s house can be stressful, especially at a young age. But eventually, it will become a bit more comfortable once the sleepover becomes fun. The episode effectively represented this scenario while providing some decent humor, including the kids falling into gopher holes while helping Lana. 

Overall, both episodes are enjoyable for their humorous camp activities and sleepover shenanigans. “Bummer Camp” is a fun episode that sees the kids living life as a fisherman while helping their Grampa save his camp. “Sleepstakes” is a solid representation of a young kid’s fear of getting homesick while spending the night at a friend’s house, making this one of the best episodes of its sixth season.
