English Dub Review: The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody “To the Battlefield of Old”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Ard is feeling guilty as they stay in Lydia’s villa while awaiting their deployment. Before he can shake those feelings, the battle against the demons begins and Ard’s group is left in charge of logistics. Ard recalls that there wasn’t any major trouble in this battle, but the demon appears before them in the rear.

Our Take:
This week’s episode continues Ard and the girls’ time-traveling adventure, with them attempting to be granted an audience for Varvatos. However, to do that, they will need to prove themselves in battle, according to Lydia. After effortlessly doing so, they finally encounter Ard’s past self. While Ard isn’t entirely pleased with his old appearance, Ireena and Ginny think otherwise. However, it was later revealed that Varvatos doesn’t have the “Demon Lord” title.
The previous episode has done well in further expanding Ard’s life as Varvatos via time travel. More importantly, it explores specific characters who aren’t what they seem based on how they’re described in the last few episodes. The prominent example is Lydia, a fearless warrior who’s also a pervert as she tries to sexually harass Ginny. She even harassed Ginny again while she was taking a bath! I guess the word “boundaries” wasn’t a thing during this era.
“To the Battlefield of Old” continues to explore Ard’s past and represents a couple of twists that turn this time-traveling adventure on its head. First, regarding Ard’s life as Varvatos, the episode reveals that Varvatos killed Lydia, but with good reason. He was forced to murder his friend due to her being cursed by Mevilas the Curse King. So when Lydia told Sylphy that her death was not Ard’s fault at the end of “The Mask Laughs”, she meant it. That moment left Ard with much guilt, which led him to attempt to prevent history from repeating itself.
However, it looks like that job’s already done, as Mevilas is decapitated by an armored knight who claims to be the Demon Lord. He’s also the mysterious person responsible for the inconsistencies in history, including Varvatos not being the Demon Lord. He’s also the target the god wanted Ard to destroy. The twists in this episode weren’t all that surprising, but they provide a strong sense of interest in this “simple” mission through time. With the being finally revealing itself, the final two episodes would have to come up with some enticing magic to bring its final arc to an exciting close.
