Review: Family Guy “Girlfriend, Eh?”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

This week, we learn that Chris has a girlfriend he met at camp that lives in Canada, but Peter doesn’t believe his own son because he’s a fat loser so the duo get on the Road to Canada. We learn that the reason why Peter can’t be happy with Chris’ situation is because Peter is, in fact, a fat loser, and as such, can’t let others be happy. Chris sees this and lets his dad think he’s correct for all of the wrong reasons.

Meanwhile, Lois and Meg get into a tiff over a repair guy’s good looks. This hunk of a man (played by Justin Hartley) ends up getting killed as a result of the mother/daughter’s ridiculous contest but we end up meeting his twin brother at the funeral. Too bad he doesn’t live in Quahog, though we do get an Arby’s bit at the end, so there’s that.

Finally, Peter attempts to explain his new Canadian game show, but fails miserably.

Our Take

The Canadian jokes are a bit cliche, and really, the gods of Canadian jokes in adult animation are by far and away, South Park. With that said, I think Peter and Chris going to Canada could’ve been a whole “Road To” episode hearkening back to the show’s glory days. This would’ve forced the writers to be a tad more original and maybe relied less on the cutaways, which were all awesome by the way.

As for Meg, Lois, and Stewie, this trio more-or-less did the same premise when Tom Brady stayed over at the house all those years ago. Granted, the “B-plot” is where most of the funny comes by way of this week, and there’s a lot of it, but nothing too different from the aforementioned “Patriot Games” episode.

There’s quite a few funny jokes this week, but each of the plots were filled with cliched jokes that you’ve seen before.
