Review: SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS “Hiccup Plague; Potato Puff”

Overview

“Dine and Bash”

No one is safe from a case of contagious hiccups.

“Potato Puff”

Mrs. Puff’s new substitute teacher gives SpongeBob a crash course in driving.

Our Take

For the first episode, much of the humor comes from Spongebob’s attempt to fight an intense form of Hiccups that begin to plague him throughout most of the episode and consequently affect those around him like a virus or sorts and problematically fucking with their day. Of course, Sandy finds an unlikely solution to sort-of work itself out…

As for the other one, the heart of the episode was mostly on Ms. Puff Spongebob’s longtime driving instructor. In many past episodes, Spongebob has often put her at odds with his wacky nature, and this would result in Puff trying to find some shortcut or easy way out to not work with him so he wouldn’t be her problem but this time she even goes as far as to take a shortcut with dressing up a Potato that she steals from a Naval submarine of all things and plants a walkie talkie on it to give the illusion she’s right next to him while he’s behind the wheel…

Overall, both episodes were passable. The first half focused on Spongebob’s hiccup problem that proceeded to fuck with everyone’s lives in comedic ways comparing hiccups to a Pandemic-like scenario. While the 2nd half feels like all this could’ve been avoided if Puff had a hidden camera on the potato so she could see where Spongebob was going, or If Puff was more proactive at her job or at least rescheduled so she could take a day off of sorts. We also learn a bit about Puff’s past as an ex-pro wrestler named “”Puff the Tuff” which I’m surprised this isn’t an actual episode in itself.
