HBO MAX News: New Adult Animated Hip-Hop Comedy From Kevin Hart In Development ; Adds Adult Swim Smalls ; The Boondocks Not Happening
HBO MAX has added a number of Adult Swim Smalls to it’s animation offerings and the streamer is promising additional shorts are on the way. The first season comprises of 15 shorts and comprises of such titles as “Mask Dog”, the “Buster” mini-series, and more.
HBO MAX has also announced that they are developing a new adult animated comedy hip-hop series with Kevin Hart and Michael Ratner called Storytown. An animated presentation has been ordered and according to Deadline, when a grandson starts causing trouble in the streets, his grandfather begins to share life lessons he learned growing up with rapping fairytale characters in a place called Storytown. Khiyon Hursey (Hamilton) and Harrison Richlin (Soundtrack) are composing the music and are co-writing with Jay Dyer (Woke).
This is all good news, but the bad news is that on a recent podcast called Geekset, that The Boondocks revival is not going forward on HBO MAX and that Sony is evaluating other options for the project. The series, confirmed by Deadline, would have followed the adventures of self-proclaimed “Civil Rights Legend” Robert “Granddad” Freeman, and his two rambunctious grandsons Huey and Riley. The family has recently moved to an idyllic community in suburban Maryland only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime. Life under Ruckus turns out to be an everyday struggle to survive.
Aaron McGruder would have returned as the showrunner, but it appears for naught.
Our Take
This isn’t the first time that Kevin Hart has attempted to dip his toes in adult animation. Kevin most recently made waves by making a key investment in Black Sands Entertainment on Shark Tank with Mark Cuban and previously teamed up with FOX on a no-go for Lil’ Kev. It appears 2022 is going to be the year where Kevin gets serious about this industry, and HBO MAX has been hungry for original content, so this could be a good match.
As for The Boondocks, the news of the show not coming back is a complete bummer, but without Aaron, The Boondocks doesn’t work.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
