English Dub Review: The Detective Is Already Dead Season One
Overview:
Kimihiko Kimizuka has found himself inadvertently entangled in various crimes more times than he can remember, referring to himself as a magnet for trouble. One day, as if it was nothing out of the ordinary, a group of unknown men kidnaps him, forcing him to board a flight—where he also encounters a hijacking. Amid the resulting chaos, however, Kimizuka meets a stunning silver-haired beauty, going by the codename Siesta, who then saves the day.
Our Take:
I can sum up this show in one word, you ready? Disappointing. There you go review over! Okay just kidding, I imagine some of you at least want a reason why this show went from one of my most anticipated shows to my biggest regrets right? Well, I’ll tell you. But first, let’s get the good out of the way cause there isn’t much.
First up is the voice acting, I have long been a fan of Austin Tindle but a lot of his roles can sound a little similar. That’s not to say he does anything too incredibly different as Kimizuka but he just brings a lot more maturity to his voice and I loved it. You would get glimpses of it in his other roles like in Domestic Girlfriend but I really think he mastered it here.
The other one who did fantastically was Xanthe Huynh as the legendary detective Siesta. While the character was occasionally hit or miss I definitely loved what Xanthe brought to the role. She and Austin’s chemistry was really well done and made the character’s rapport even more believable. I would also like to give an honorable mention to Arryn Zech who plays Nagisa Natsunagi. I actually liked the character and how little she was in the show was part of my problem and I really thought Arryn grew into the role.
My final good for the show is tricky because it fits into both categories and that is the animation. If you had watched the first episode and stopped there you would probably think this was show was a master class. But I promise you that is far from the case here. The first and last episodes have some really good animation but as I stated multiple times in my episode reviews that must have been where all of the budget went. The rest is sloppy and not nearly up to the standard that the first episode sets your expectations at.
That’s it all the good stuff is done. The rest is a messy show without much to offer other than some fun characters and occasionally well-done comedy. There was one decent twist as well so I will give it credit for that. But the show was confusing to watch with how often it went back and forth from the past to the present. Most times with no notice and in the middle of a dangling plot thread. Do yourself a favor and if the premise of this sounds interesting to you just read the light novel.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
