English Dub Review: Akebi’s Sailor Uniform “See You Tomorrow”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Komichi’s first day at Roubai Academy may be a little awkward, but her new friends welcome her with open arms  in this new chapter in her life.

Our Take

Slice of life doesn’t particularly interest me as a genre. Nothing against those who like it; it’s clearly a popular genre and Akebi’s Sailor Uniform is far from the first show about a girl navigating school life. The premise is a bit simple, but for a show whose ambitions stay grounded, the execution is pretty well done.

“See You Tomorrow” begins with the new student Komichi making her first impression to her fellow classmates at Roubai Academy. And though she’s filled with a spirit imbued by her sailor uniform, Komichi can’t help but make a few social errors. Case in point, Komichi honestly thinks the best way to impress her classmates is to do a backflip that makes her look like a ghost (apparently errant of the knowledge the class could see up her skirt).

While another show may go for the easy route of having a group immediately single out Komichi for her awkwardness, this show takes a more soft route and puts her with a crew of friends who finds Komichi’s unique personality charming. Though she gets some minor ribbing and egging on from one new pal, it’s not exactly from a place of malice. It’s just a new group of friends getting to know one another.

And the more I watched, the more I understood why a genre like slice-of-life is important. Sometimes having low stakes is all you really want in a program. Sure, Komichi isn’t going to be saving the world or fighting aliens anytime soon, but she doesn’t need to be. She’s content with this new path in her life working out just as she dreamed. For her, being welcomed into the life that came with her sailor uniform with a new friend saying “See you tomorrow!” is just as thrilling to her as slaying a demon. It also helps that the music and gorgeous visuals help contribute to the show’s pleasant atmosphere.

The world of Akebi’s Salior Uniform sets out to create a chill, welcoming environment that doesn’t want to stress its audience. It’s intentions are the same of its protagonist. Greet you with a smile, try to make you laugh and spread a little joy. The show hopes you enjoy spending time with it and are willing to come back for more. While I can’t say that I’m a huge fan yet, I can definitely say that I appreciate it for trying so hard to achieve its goals.
