English Dub Review: Sonny Boy “The Long Goodbye”

Overview:

Hoshi has some issues going on. One of the worlds is a movie world and changing the film changes the real world. Mizuho meets a talking dog that turns out to be a student from a different time. His name is Yamabiko and he’s been drifting for 5,000 years.

Our Take:

If you didn’t think Sonny Boy could get any weirder, I hate to tell you that you’re wrong. Now it seems like there’s some time travel stuff going on with the new character Yamabiko. I’m sure we will get more information on him but for now, he’s a dog who used to be a human. He was also a grade behind everyone so he technically comes from the future? But he’s also been drifting for 5,000 years? Like I said… weird.

Christopher Wehkamp joins the cast as Yamabiko and he is a welcome addition. You might recognize him as Aizawa/Eraserhead in My Hero Academia. I’ve really enjoyed everything he does and having him play such a unique character could work out really well. There’s got to be a reason that Yamabiko is a dog so when we get there I am sure that Chris will do a great job.

I don’t even know how to go about reviewing this show sometimes. Like I barely know what’s going on and I am hoping this show nails the ending. Seriously, I know that the ending is a huge deal to me with every show but I feel like it’s going to be very important for Sonny Boy. If this makes no sense by the end it will definitely affect how the whole series is viewed to me. But right now I am optimistic it is leading up to some sort of crazy reveal.

When Yamabiko sees Ms. Aki he says that she can’t be a teacher cause only students get drifted. Then it briefly shows her skirt possibly hinting at her being a student from another timeline or something? I’m not sure but it could be really cool if executed well. Ms.Aki is not the greatest person as of now so I hope she gets fleshed out too because right now she’s just kind of a villain for villain’s sake.

If you’ve been watching Sonny Boy up till now, you’re probably going to keep watching because let’s face it… you want to know what’s going on. Maybe that’s their plan with all the weirdness, to hook people. Well, for me at least it worked and I look forward to seeing what happens and hopefully getting some answers.
