English Dub Review: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun “The Ultimate Halberd”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Asmodeus and Sabnock face the red dragon in battle with the best of their abilities, at least when they’re not bickering, but soon run out of energy, forcing Balam to take over and defeat the beast. But the Six Fingers combine all three of the beaten monsters into one chimera, leading to Balam being joined by Kalego and Opera to beat that too. And even then, the Six Fingers use all of the beast’s remaining power to fire on the shelter housing the survivors of the attack. But as it charges its attack, Ronove uses his bloodline ability of Charisma to draw the attention of everything towards him, including the beast. However, this now means that the attack will basically just kill him, so Iruma steps in to block the blast.
OUR TAKE
The Walter Park arc reaches its climax with a lot of surprise inclusions in the big all out monsters attack. Asmodeus, for example, has certainly been front and center with the rest of the main cast, but he’s often overshadowed by all the cute girls and experienced adults. So, imagine my pleasant surprise when him and Sabnock (another character I expected to be constantly overlooked) actually hold their own pretty dang well against the dragon. Like with the big blue bull, it ultimately requires teacher intervention, but it’s still pretty cool to see these two in action for once. Same with Balam, who I don’t think we’ve ever seen in a proper fight before either, even able to summon a big green monster to fill out the Generation 1 Pokemon Game Version Colors. And even against the combined form, it was neat for Kalego to have to use his summoned little chicken form for once, which is not something I thought they would be using again any time soon. Basically, everyone here has gotten a chance to shine and kick total ass, which is honestly not as common in long running shonen series as you might expect.
But probably the real MVP would be Ronove Romiere, whose usually disruptive ability to pull focus actually working in his favor by redirecting the chimera’s attack towards him. I swear to god there’s a Yu-Gi-Oh card with that effect but it escapes me at the moment. Also, I thing I forgot to mention last time was that Crocel makes use of her Kuromu Devi-dol persona to cheer up the survivors’ spirits, which makes what Ronove is defending even that much more concrete and understandable. He’s never been a villain or even antagonist in his previous appearances, more of a well meaning rival than anything else. And while he doesn’t often come off as very intimidating or threatening even on his best days, this is exactly the kind of moment where his abilities can come into play, even at the very real risk of his own life. He’s not GOING to die, obviously, though with his tertiary importance in the cast, he very well could have, though that would have to be the first step towards making the series a lot darker, which I don’t expect them to do quite yet. Anyway, next time: The much awaited epic conclusion to the Walter Park Arc!
