English Dub Review: The Honor at Magic High School Episodes 3 & 4

Overview

“The Girl’s Detective Club is here!”

“Friends”
After a shocking twist where freshmen’s admission test scores are leaked. Honoka, Shizuku, and Eimi pursue the guilty culprits by themselves without informing Miyuki to ensure that things don’t go out of control. However, two of them may get kidnapped before they can out the truth behind the attacks…

Our Take

For the former episode, the plot is progressing at a natural pace and it actually makes sense this time, unlike the last 2 episodes which were a confusing mess at first before getting weird with the sibling dynamics of our leads. The story this time around is focused a whole lot more on the class one characters, and we got another addition to the cast of Tatsuya fangirls.

As for the other episode, Honoka, Shizuku, and Eimi doing their “Girls’ Detective Club” mission, while trying to maintain a balance of screentime for Miyuki worrying so much about her vanity and what outfit she wants to wear to impress Tatsuya but wacky hijinx ensues…

Overall, “The Girl’s Detective Club is here!” mostly worked as a collection of individual scenes with Miyuki flash-freezing people and Mayumi ordering ramen were the comical standouts for me. As for the other episode, “Friends”, Miyuki got some more action again on screen. Her jealousy seems a bit over the top, but it came to an abrupt halt it got a bit more serious with the criminals attacking the school and the council president giving a speech about discrimination. Hopefully, the rest of the show can keep a consistent tone so it doesn’t fall victim to “Tonal Whiplash” on a frequent basis.
