English Dub Review: My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s “The Assassin Plays With A Cat”
Overview
After defeating a dragon, Akira and Amelia are shocked to discover it’s not really a Dragon. Meanwhile, Akira’s classmates decide to formulate a plan…
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, Akira remains the grounded and compelling protagonist, blending calm intelligence, empathy, and decisiveness as he navigates new challenges, while Amelia’s growing bond with him adds warmth, heart, and vulnerability that make their interactions feel genuine and natural. The introduction of a character largely known as “Night” brings a fun and unexpected energy to the trio, injecting humor and charm that lightens the tone without undercutting the episode’s emotional depth. Together, their chemistry provides a memorable dynamic that enriches both character-driven storytelling and the overarching narrative, leaving viewers engaged and invested in what comes next.
At the same time, Tsukasa and his group remain an essential part of the story’s momentum, demonstrating thoughtful leadership, intelligence, and teamwork that set them apart from typical isekai supporting casts. Their calm deliberation and willingness to learn give their journey purpose and depth, making them feel like fully realized characters rather than background players. The episode balances reflective, character-driven moments with bursts of tension and excitement, while the visuals remain crisp and expressive, and the music perfectly underscores the shifting moods. Watching the hero party sit down, discuss strategy, and plan their next moves feels unusually rational and grounded for the genre, and it’s refreshing to see classmates who neither resent Akira nor act as contrived rivals like half the Jackasses in Shield Hero’s early seasons, adding a sense of maturity and cohesion to the proceedings.
Overall, this episode delivers on every front. With its sharp pacing, heartfelt character work, and a confident sense of direction that keeps the story engaging from start to finish. Akira, Amelia, Night, and Tsukasa each have standout moments that deepen their development and strengthen the emotional core of the series, while the writing balances maturity and warmth without over-complicating the narrative. The world continues to expand in intriguing ways, supported by thoughtful storytelling and strong production values that tie everything together seamlessly. Ending on a striking cliffhanger that raises the stakes and reaffirms that the series is far more intelligent, grounded, and emotionally resonant than it has any right to be.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
