English Dub Review: My Hero Academia “Long Time No See, Selkie”

Overview:

Checking in on the other’s work-study programs. More specifically, Uraraka and Tsuyu’s with Ryuko. They are joined by upper-classman Nejire. Pro hero Selkie, who Tsuyu did her work-study with last time, requests a team up with Ryuko. There are some villains that are transporting a dangerous quirk-enhancing drug called trigger. It’s up to them to stop it from being distributed.

Our Take:

I have mentioned this before but My Hero Academia filler just hits different. Sure it doesn’t advance the plot but it’s rarely more than one episode and is usually a lot of fun. I know in season two getting to see Tsuyu’s work with Selkie was really awesome. As a manga reader, I wanted to see a bit more of Selkie so when the show provided I was really happy. I think I can confidently say that you shouldn’t skip any of the filler in this series. Especially if you love the characters as much as I do.

It was really cool to get to see some female heroes kicking ass too. Sure there was the obligatory beach scene but the fanservice wasn’t too tasteless and didn’t linger. Selkie explained that he wanted them to know what peace was like so during the battle they would know what they’re fighting for. I guess that is as decent an explanation for fanservice as we can get.

Fanservice aside, Selkie was the only male hero shown. So, that means all the aspects of the mission were carried out by women. Selkie relied on them all as well, it was just a really refreshing episode in this regard. There was only one scene of blushing, Uraraka does have Deku on her mind a lot after all.

Speaking of Uraraka, she was the biggest winner in this episode. She stopped the villain in the plane with martial arts and then made the whole plane weightless. She threw up afterward but hey… she’s getting better! My only complaint was the villains weren’t really a factor at all. They were the epitome of throw-away, villain of the week types.

I love episodes like this. They feel like a fun little palette cleanser until we get back to the plot. Next week it looks like we will be meeting the rest of Shoto’s family. I can’t wait to see how Bakugo especially interacts with everyone. He always has something snarky to say. I imagine there will be some tension too what with Endeavor’s past and all.
