English Dub Review: Dragon Goes House-Hunting: “A Home for a Black Dragon”
Overview: Dearia (Steven Kelly) continues telling Letty (Michael Kovach) tales of his past exploits, this time discussing how he came to meet and become friends with the black dragon, Varney (Chris Guerrero).
Our Take: Early on in the series, Dearia was always teased as having a previous dragon before Letty in which he had shared adventures with. From the outset, perhaps due to my delusions about his dark scale color and overall outward appearance, he always seemed like he was going to be this hardened dragon. So suffice to say it came as a shock when he turned out to most certainly not be that way.
Although from the gecko, Dragon Goes House-Hunting has been defying expectations with characters despite how they may look on the outside. From Dearia’s dark lord tale itself to friendly dungeon to simply Letty in concept, Varney represents yet another ironic turn of events with his uncivilized and childish demeanor. That makes for some various charming moments throughout with his immature personality often being a thorn in Dearia’s side and a funny burden as they search for his perfect home. Not to mention how Varney grows tired of Dearia’s stickler nature for books for any and all information. But the other layer to their chemistry is how they represent that of bickering brothers, growing irritated with each other. Varney looking for a home also acts as a strong origin for Dearia as a realtor and architect, as we get to see him begin cultivating his skills with testing out strong materials for home construction and looking for proper human housing for dragon use.
Varney’s world experience also clashes with Dearia’s naivety, at that time, about the world as a whole. It is eloquently tackled through their clashing personalities and expertise from the world as a whole but culminates as a lesson for Dearia with that scene also showcasing Varney’s heartfelt side in his yearning for family and Dearia as a successor. It is a sweet and endearing moment for both establishing what will become their long lasting friendship and Dearia’s future career path.
“A Home for a Black Dragon” gives another piece of Dearia’s past with an amazing new character introduced in Varney, dynamic chemistry and hilarity all around.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
