English Dub Review: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun “The Student Council President’s Gaze”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Despite the spell against her nearly wearing off, Ameri has still not regained her confidence. However, she feels like she’d be okay with that if Iruma stayed by her side, but he repeats words she once told him: That he would rather she pursue her ambitions than some ideal. This gives her the motivation to get back to her old self during the speech portion of the election, which she wins in a landslide and punishes the real culprit, though she does let her opponent work on the council. She also offers Iruma the chance to stay on as well, though he decides to stick to the Magical Apparatus club he and his friends were in before. Though unknown to him, Ameri has realized that she has feelings for him.
OUR TAKE
Quite the wholesome ending to this brief but fun story arc. Being the hapless nice protagonist guy, Iruma is due to attract plenty of cute ladies, and it seems that one of those is finally aware of her feelings. There were already plenty of seeds planted in their particular relationship, with Iruma’s aforementioned pure and innocent behavior along with his genuine integrity and ambition catching Ameri’s eye, though only after finding him out as a human and making him translate smuggled romance manga in. Having that sort of exclusivity and being increasingly associated with romantic fiction is bound to make that connect dots in Ameri’s head, along with the fact that she seems to not have many close friends what with all of her busy work maintaining an iron grip on the Student Council. To find someone who she can actually have fun with and who seems to share an ambitious spirit has got to check off a lot of boxes for her, even if she doesn’t initially realize it. But like with everyone around their crush, Ameri gets self conscious about whether or not she’s Iruma’s type, and then compares herself to what society expects women her age to be like.
This is the basic set up for her character at the start of this arc and is what leads to her being hit with that spell which seems to turn her into the “ideal” girl, shy and submissive instead of ambitious and headstrong. The reasoning given by the student her made it is that he wanted her to be more like that ideal, and it seems that this gave Ameri the chance to see if this was what she wanted. Even after it apparently was close to wearing off on its own, she clung to it because she thought it would get her Iruma. But Iruma instead chose to push her forward in what she would want instead of trying to force her into what he thought would be best. That’s a quality one should look for in any partner; someone who wants you to get what you want. It’s not the only quality, and a lot of those vary from person to person, but it does look to be what Ameri is looking for. And now that she knows one of the things she wants is HIM, it will be interesting to see how her behavior changes, starting with the new arc next week.
