English Dub Review: SSSS. Dynazenon “What’s Lover-Like Mean?”

Overview:

Yume and Yomogi meet with the guy who knew Yume’s sister. Chise is practicing with Dyna Soldier. Koyomi meets with Inamoto, has a flashback that suggests something happened between them. Everyone goes to the pool even the Kaiju Eugenicists. A kaiju shows up and Dynazenon tries out some new moves.

Our Take:

We didn’t get the Koyomi character development I wanted. Not yet at least because his scene with Inamoto was like a minute long but there was an interesting flashback. I definitely don’t think she’s married now after how she reacted to Koyomi asking if it was okay for them to be out together. Hopefully, that goes somewhere soon.

Keeping with the love theme, Yume and Yomogi are told to act like lovers by Gauma at the pool. They are trying to fool Shizumu and complete “Operation: Capture Kaiju Eugenicist”. It must have worked a little bit cause he did ask if they were dating. An incident at the pool causes Yume to have a flashback that suggests she witnessed something bad involving a corpse. Was it her sister? That’s my guess but I am sure we will find out soon. Meeting with another person who knew her sister suggests that she might have committed suicide.

The battle animations continue to be spot on. The CGI isn’t super obtrusive and noticeable and the monster designs are cool and unique. My only issue with the fights is they happen too often in my opinion. It’s like a Power Rangers episode with how strictly it sticks to the formula. If the kaiju fights fit with the theme of the episode it would be better but that hasn’t been the case. I am glad the fights are good otherwise it would be a bigger problem but as it stands now it’s just a minor nitpick.

This episode was really funny too with how Gauma kept trying (and failing) to capture Shizumu. Another thing that HAS to be a recurring gag is Onija almost dying at the end of each battle. He always makes a comment on it too, he’s voiced by David Matranga and he really brings out the humor.

A solid episode with more mysteries piling up. Hopefully, some of them start getting solved soon or at least get some more information. I need more than bread crumbs! Funimation seems to be doing the show weekly so far. New episode next week if we’re lucky!
