English Dub Review: Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki “Equipment for girls has special effects”

Overview

Dejected by Aoi Hinami’s harsh criticism, Fumiya Tomozaki goes back to his old ways. With his sister noticing how much he has regressed, she convinces him to reply to the text messages he has been receiving, among them being a date request from Fūka he received two days ago. He accepts her request and goes on a date, but reveals to her that he has been taking lessons on how to improve his life and is cheered up by her approval.

Sometime later, Fumiya asks Hinami to meet him at the place they first met under their gaming avatar names. There, he shares with Aoi a unique perspective…

Our Take

This anime was actually quite alright and I did enjoy it at times. The drama wasn’t always the best and there were lots of cringe moments but it was fun seeing Fumiya progressing as an individual, glad he finally became a decent person to some extent as well even if things didn’t go the way Aoi envisioned.

Although Aoi’s methods were at times effective, they acted merely to serve as the foundation. Real-life is always about being able to think on your feet and adapt to changing situations. Fumiya’s calling out of Aoi though really was ballsy. Still, the gamer’s challenge was an apt way for them to prove themselves and to stand their ground in knowing what they want.

Overall this was a respectable finale, but nothing amazing. It ended the series on a high note while also leaving a good foundation for any possible continuations that may develop. Fumiya going his own way means that he’s beginning to outgrow himself too much, maybe TOO MUCH for a guide such as Aoi to drop out of their “friendship” indefinitely, and yet it was a unique way to leave things open-ended and for Fumiya to teach Aoi something for once. Let’s hope for a Season 2 in the future!
