English Dub Review: Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina “The Two Apprentices”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Elaina arrives in Qunorts but given the civilians talk about it being a danger for witches to be roaming around, she decides to leave her usual outfit in her room and travel as a regular tourist. Meanwhile, Saya arrives on the way to deliver the box to the Magic Association. However, the leader of the Curio company in disguise stops her in an attempt to get the box. Saya leaves not before the leader shoots a red ball at her that leaves. Soon after she meets Mina, her little sister who’s doing undercover work for the Magic Association. On the other hand, Elaina walks around the town stopping at a cafe that appeared in her favorite book series.

Then Elaina wakes up in Saya’s body and opens the box in her hands. It released an extreme version of a love potion which causes the town to go crazy. After knocking out Mina Elaina goes to find herself and realizes that she’s switches bodies with Saya. Then robbers start looting the shops while leads the two witches to stop and question them. After a few threats, Elaina and Saya find their leader and question her about the magic she used on them. Sheila and Fran show up saying that they’ve already taken care of the robbers while entering the town. They all chat after and part ways with Fran and Elaina having a private conversation before Elaina continues on her journey.

Our Take:

This week’s episode predictably has Elaina and Saya caught up in the Curio company’s shenanigans. The only twist is that the two witches switched bodies thanks to the Curio company’s leader.

Now the episode was a bit amusing with Saya and Elaina finding out they’ve body swapped. However, the Curio company shenanigans are cringy to the point of cartoonish. I had to wince at the fact that one of the goons spilled out their entire plan right in front of Elaina and Saya. Elaina and Saya tie up the robbers before moving on to their leader. The leader doesn’t give hope until Fran and Sheila show up commenting on their last encounter with her band of robbers. She quickly answers their questions on the effect of the body switch and the love potion in the box. Then the case wraps up the witches in the cafe.

Mina is Saya’s younger sister and she’s the exact opposite of lax and carefree Saya. However, she does care about her sister as evidenced when she was under the effects of the love potion before Elaina knocked her out. Furthermore, Mina is Sheila’s apprentice and that was a bit surprising, but it just goes to show how it’s a small world in the witches’ circle.

Then there’s Fran’s conversation with Elaina on her mentor being the author of her favorite book series. However, Elaina doesn’t want to acknowledge it since it might change the way she’ll travel from now. Fran reassures her that she’ll still be the Ashen Witch. That conversation was sweet even if it was sad to see Elaina refuse to try and put it together since that’s what the show had been building up to with her visit to Fran’s academy. Elaina continues her journey as carefree as ever.

Overall it looks like the show will continue Elaina’s journey in a cheerful tone. I wonder if she’ll visit her parents soon.
