English Dub Review: Cells at Work: Code Black “Caffeine, Temptation, and Jealousy”

Overview:

RBC wins the best rookie award, and his friend starts to feel jealous and upset. Some of the other red blood cells take him to get some extra caffeine which turns him around. A nosebleed almost kills him but our hero helps save him.

Our Take:

RBC’s friend is feeling down on his luck with all the praise our main hero is getting. He’s winning awards and just showing a lot of growth. So, he does what a lot of us have done and relies on a crutch, for him it’s caffeine. The way caffeine is portrayed in this you would think it was a way heavier drug than that. Though I suppose that’s the message they are going for here.

This episode almost entirely focused on RBC’s friend, which was kind of unique. Getting to see him through the lens of someone else was kind of cool and makes you respect the character even more. I loved the development he got and I really think the show will be better for it but I do have one complaint.

Why is it that what is essentially a side character gets more development than one of the main characters? Heck, if you really want to break it down this is just adding to the development of RBC even more. I want a WBC focused episode even more now. Before I thought they just might not do it because they want to focus on RBC. Well we now know that isn’t the case so give WBC some justice! She didn’t even show up in this episode!

I don’t always talk about the music or soundtracks, though I do sometimes like to touch on the openings and endings. In this episode, there was one point where the soundtrack really made the scene. When RBC was attempting to rescue his friend from the nosebleed and he was giving that inspirational speech I had goosebumps. Entirely cause of the music they played during that scene. It goes to show that the music can really sell a scene and enhance it.

All in all it was a fun episode with more development for our main RBC with his friend even learning a thing or two about himself. This show does character development really well I just want them to do it with more than one character. They showed they can do it with a side character as well. Let’s hope White Blood Cell gets her episode soon. We know what RBC thinks of her but it would be interesting to get her side of things as well.
