Review: Doomsday Brothers “Mutants Gone Wild”

Overview:

Things get uncomfortable when Dwayne and Suzette wake up in bed together. But it gets even worse when they discover that they are wearing each others’ clothes and chained together by the ankles.

The two most boisterous citizens of St. Zephyr attempt to piece together their night before by reaching out to their friends. Unfortunately for them, their antics have caused more damage than they realize. Yet, they must work together if they ever plan on being free from one another.

Meanwhile, Johnny has finally had enough of Suzette’s flirtatious ways. Disgusted with himself and what he has become, he attempts to end it all. But that might be more difficult than he realizes.

Our Take:

For the second episode in a row, one of the main characters of Doomsday Brothers, Judith, does not make an appearance. More shocking than that, the two titular brothers don’t even have a line throughout this episode. Instead, we get St. Zephyr’s new power couple, Suzette and Dwayne in a puzzling together of their drug-induced evening – much to the same tune of The Hangover.

Thankfully, not one of the main cast members is missed. The citizens of St. Zephyr are quite enough to power this series all on their own. Specifically, Dwayne and Suzette. Combining these two flawed alpha characters makes for a solid dynamic. Especially when you see how delicate their mutual respect can be.

This episode got the full spin-off treatment. There is hardly a mention of Gabe and Rafe, who found themselves in extremely dangerous territory in the previous episode. Yet, all the beloved citizens of the town manage to make an appearance through this story. Each more humorous than the last, as we discover the awful ways that Dwayne and Suzette treated them in their rambunctious evening.

Even reappearing villain, Manson Lawless, adds to the plot. Giving Johnny an outlet for his rage, and subsequently, someone to help figure out a way that he can die. And of course, Lawless ends up ahead by the conclusion. Because this show is never afraid to let the bad guy win.

With one episode left of the season, choosing to not include the titular characters is a bold and unpredictable manoeuvre. Though it is clever. The last time we saw Gabe and Rafe was enough to get you to jump out of your chair. Instead of diving back into their story, the show is allowing that tension to build.

That leaves a massive set up for the season finale set to premiere next week. Following the pattern of these last two episodes, the finale would focus exclusively on Judith and AENUS. With some elaborate story that would be equally humorous and impactful for the series. At this point, it would not be surprising if we don’t see Gabe and Rafe again until the (fingers crossed) second season. Though it may be disappointing if everything didn’t come together for a satisfying conclusion.

Regardless of how things will end, this episode was an unexpected treat. The townsfolk of St. Zephyr are often the best part of this series. Giving them a platform to take the lead in their own adventure was a nice reward. And it speaks volumes for a show that can carry on without involving the main characters at all.
