English Dub Review: Black Clover “A Witch’s Homecoming”

Vanessa Enoteca a long supporting character of the Black Bulls returns to the Witches Forest to ask her mother the Queen Witch for help in the oncoming battle with Megicula and the Spade Kingdom, admitting that Rouge can be defeated if Vanessa runs out of magic. The Queen refuses but does promise a way to increase her power, on condition that Vanessa helps the security golems guard the forest against dangerous magical beasts. She sends two novice witches to help, Samantha and Elvira whose Sound and Illusion magic’s are ill-suited to battle. Due to the progressive incompetence of the two, Vanessa eventually figures out another way to help the two utilize their respective magics properly…

Our Take

This was another decent filler episode, with the focus being on Vanessa. I like the individual developments we’re getting for characters, but to make the episodes more interesting I think there simply needs to be more familiar characters than just two Witches whore are introduced in just one episode because at this point, who’s knows if we’ll ever see Samantha or Elvira again. But for Vanessa’s moment, there’s a nice life lesson in this episode mostly on her becoming a strategist of sorts.

As a character, Vanessa is really taking care of her friends and ready to change fate just for them. I like the personal growth of the characters, but the episode’s message itself within the narrative was not really unique and quite predictable, but I still thought it was alright. While I thought this was going to be focused on her training it looks like the episode was more about her reaffirming her resolve to fight.

Overall, I’m glad that we actually have this time to flesh out the side characters, and I feel like this will all develop into an amazing build-up for when we finally get into this Spade Kingdom/Megicula Arc assuming it actually happens…
