Review: Doomsday Brothers “Flowers for Chudley”

Overview:

While attempting to save their dog from a mutant, Rafe and Gabe come across an abandoned research lab. Unaware of what they are working with, Rafe inadvertently causes Gabe to change bodies with their pet, Chudley.

By happenstance, before the mind switch, Gabe was starting to make the moves on Anna. But now, the dog is receiving the rewards as the two “hook up”. Meanwhile, Rafe is blissfully unaware as he tries to use the same machine to help him boost his own sexual fortitude.

Elsewhere, Dwayne discovers that Johnny’s tears are a psychoactive drug. Leading the antlered man to go down an acid-trip induced sexual rabbit hole. While Suzanne capitalizes on becoming his drug dealer.

Our Take:

Three episodes in and Doomsday Brothers continues to grow on fans.

The Canadian sitcom is managing to keep up with the best that Adult Swim has to offer, while simultaneously shaking up the adult animation scene in Canada. No longer is our own homegrown animation lost to late-night Teletoons, or after-hours CBC. Tonight, on Adult Swim Canada Doomsday Brothers aired before a brand-new episode of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal.  That is prime real estate for an animation on a cable network, and Doomsday Brothers showed that it was deserving of the timeslot.

For a show that is afraid to drop an f-bomb or animate a woman’s nipples, this show does not shy away from the innuendos, and obscene situations. In tonight’s episode, there is a cliché body switching storyline that was the theme of so many 90s children movies. However, it takes a nasty turn when the local bartender taps the guy with a dog’s brain. While that may not constitute as bestiality, I would say that it is borderline at the least.

Hold on.

Considering the female in question is a mutated human with chicken legs, and presumably bird genitalia, this could definitely be considered bestiality.

While this disturbing plot progresses, there is also the whole side story of Dwayne getting hooked on drugs. Drugs that protrude out of the eyelids of a human-like blob, I should add. Again, while the show avoids swearing, there is no stopping them from getting into psychedelics. And not with the intention of teaching any morals, this guy straight up became a junky in front of us.

Speaking on the psychedelic drugs, the plot also delivered some of the best animations we have seen out of the show thus far. During my last review, I noted that the animation of Doomsday Brothers is too clean and could do with being a little grittier. The polished finish of this show paid off in this episode when the animators had a chance to animate a full-on acid trip. And while it may not be how I remember psychedelics; the animation was impressive and unique.

Doomsday Brothers is truly coming along as a highlight of Sunday nights. That is a significant feat for a Canadian show that is going toe-to-toe in a timeslot with The SimpsonsBut this show is delivering unique plots, characters, and designs. Hopefully, the series continues to deliver, and it can establish itself amongst the major American animated sitcoms.
