For the first time, the famous duo of Kang and Kodos were broken up in “Treehouse of Horror XXI”. Unfortunately, only one of the aliens manages to make it onscreen – surprisingly the often metacharacters make no mention of it. In the segment “War and Pieces” the citizens of Springfield are transferred into classic board games ala Jumanji. Selma, playing a dating game continues to open a door presenting different suitors, one of which is Kang… or Kodos… but I think it’s Kang.

For something completely different, “Treehouse of Horror XXII” features Kang and Kodos on their home planet, Rigel 7. In an Avatar parody, “In the Na’Vi” Bart and Milhouse are given bodies of the natives, and Bart falls in love with Kang’s daughter. Krusty leads an invasion to capture an element called Hillarium from the Rigelians but is fought off with some help from the animals. Finally, Kang and Kodos confused by the attack admit that they would have easily given the Hillarium to the humans if they had just asked.

2012’s episode of “Treehouse of Horror” kicked off with a segment about the Mayan prediction of the world ending. Three massive stone figures come to the Earth and quickly start destroying everything. In one moment, one of the figures takes the Lard Lad’s giant doughnut and throws it into space. The doughnut narrowly misses Kang and Kodos’ ship in a throwback to “Treehouse of Horror VI”. Also, the aliens are dressed for the festivities with Kang dressed as Captain Hook and Kodos appearing as Tinker Bell.

Kang and Kodos continue their non-speaking cameos in season twenty-five. In the final segment titled “Freaks No Geeks,” Mr. Burnsum is introducing his freak show circus attractions to the audience. The freaks include Strongman Homer, Bart attached to Selma’s neck, and of course Kang and Kodos. This is the only time that the humans have managed to capture and enslave the aliens, a reverse of what they constantly try to accomplish.

In the twenty-fifth edition of “Treehouse of Horror” Kang and Kodos return to helping open up the show. The two green aliens host a late-night talk show, Johnny Carson-style live from Rigel 7.  The opening even offers some clips of older episodes of “Treehouse”. The ending is a little dark as they announce that all of the planned celebrity guests have been killed, their bodies moved to display the title card to the episode.

Kang and Kodos return to their meta dialogue in the twenty-sixth edition of “Treehouse of Horror”.  The aliens close out the programming before the credits roll. This time they are complaining that once again they are limited to nothing more than a cameo. But, Kodos warns that if they complain too much that the producers will punish them – which they do by cutting their screen to 4:3 ratio. Afterwards, Kodos says “just because it looks like season 4 doesn’t make it season 4”.

In the twenty-eighth season, the alien’s cameo is again limited. Just like in “Treehouse of Horror XXI” only one of the two green monsters gets to appear on the screen. Either Kang or Kodos stands in a non-speaking role beside some of The Simpsons most nefarious villains. In the opening, Sideshow Bob has assembled the group of bad guys which includes himself, the ghost of Frank Grimes, the evil leprechaun, and what is presumed to be Kang. Thankfully, Maggie manages to murder all of the living members of this group before they can do anything dangerous.

Kang and Kodos get the chance to make an appearance in a new variation in “Treehouse of Horror XXVIII”. The episode opens with a Sausage Party parody that sees The Simpsons and friends reimagined as CGI animated candies. While Bart appears as a Butterfinger and Homer an Oh Henry, Kang and Kodos also get to join in the fun as lollipops. They are also given the names of Kit-Kang and Kit-Kodos, to play off the chocolate bar names.

Last year we saw what is potentially the smallest of all of Kang and Kodos’ Halloween cameos. In fact, it is such a small appearance that it can be easily missed if you are not paying attention. The green aliens can only be seen briefly riding a bicycle in the background of a scene in “Invasion of the Pod-y Snatchers”. However, they seem pretty happy living on an alien planet that is supposedly paradise.

Finally, this year’s edition of “Treehouse of Horror” brought Kang and Kodos to the forefront once more. This time, Kang takes the stage as an imprisoned monster. The Shape of Water parody sees Selma fall in love with the green alien – to add him to the long list of suitors she has had (non-canonically). This was a return of our favourite aliens after being limited to cameos since “Treehouse of Horror XXII”. But, thank goodness they get to play a more significant role in episode 666, and the thirtieth “Treehouse” edition.
