English Dub Review: Black Clover “Release from Misfortune”

Season 3 begins!

(Possible Spoilers Below)

Out of Grief-fueled Rage from seeing Father Orsi dying before his eyes from poison in the previous episode, Asta’s grief summons from his grimoire the sword he took from Licht, now as black and rusted as his other swords. As he grasps the sword he experiences a disturbing vision of Licht and his anti-magic demon form activates. In the process, this new sword proves to be far more powerful than Asta’s other swords as it ends up doing something unthinkable yet surprising in a good way.

Asta then decides to use the sword to turn the possessed knights back to normal. The elf attacking the village, disgusted by all the humans, tries to unleash all his magic at once. Yuno senses the elf’s soul is in great pain and Asta thinks the elf must be asking for help. To prevent the elf from turning into something even more monstrous, Asta strikes him in the chest which ends in some surprising results.

The Clover King, who has been asleep with his mistresses the entire time, is awoken and becomes terrified after learning the kingdom is under attack by its own magic knights and squad captains. But while this is going on, Asta and Yuno tell Father Orsi and the others everything they know about the elf situation while Digit, the no longer possessed knight, reveals the elf possessing him was the peaceful type. Asta decides they must save both their human friends and the elves and take Digit with them. The floating dungeon passes over Magna and Vanessa and the possessed Luck decides to attack a nearby village. Yuno senses this and they decide to split up to both follow the dungeon and stop Luck, though despite the level of progression the episode has reached the episode ends when the two argue about how to handle the situation with a yet to be decided answer.

Our Take

For the start of the newest and possibly last season this was quite a setup for a battle of epic proportions, Astra has come along way even though he still comes across as a simple-minded dolt who wants to Marry the Nun who raised him, but seeing more of his magic progress and seeing how far he and Yuno have gone is kind’ve a shock even to people new to this series like myself.

The Elf situation also shows that not every Elf seems to have evil or malicious intent and it’s clear that our two leads have a long way to go before they can fix their friends who seem possessed and their powers being misused for what looks like malicious intent.

Whether or not the two will find an answer that brings the two into the same page I’m sure will be properly decided in the next episode but I can’t wait to see where this goes.
